BENIN CITY-Gunmen have allegedly killed a Policeman, wounded three others and set patrol van ablaze in an early morning ambush by Ovia River bridge along Benin-Iguobazuwa road in Ovia South West Local Government Area of Edo State, yesterday.

Also, a young man have been beheaded by rampaging cultists in a swift reprisal for the killing of another, bringing to two casualties recorded within few hours of bloody clash at Uwelu area of Benin City, last Sunday.

The gunmen were said to have arrived the river bank in two speed boats as they opened fire on the four policemen who were on patrol.

It was gathered that the officers who probably returned fire escaped with their guns into a nearby bush abandoning their Hilux van at the mercy of their attackers.

The gunmen were said to have set the police vehicle on fire as they fired their way back to their operational speed boats and fled.

It was also learnt that Police in Ogida picked a fresh head of a young man at Iyobosa junction, Off Uwelu road few hours after recovery the body of another boy killed and dumped at the same junction by the warring cultists.

The first victim identified as Wisdom was shot dead and dumped at Iyobosa junction about 7:21pm, last Sunday.

It was further gathered that some of his cult members in the area swiftly mobilized, invaded the residence of a member of a rival cult group in Ayebelo area of Egor, identified as Ogbe, severed his head which they eventually dumped at the same Iyobosa junction where the corpse their member was earlier dumped and recovered by the police.

The Commissioner of Police in Edo CP Johnson Kokumo and the police command Public Relations Officer DSP Moses Nkombe were not available to comment on the incidents when our reporter visited the police headquarters in Benin City, yesterday.

A source however said no policeman was killed in the ambush as police had intensified a clampdown on the cultists.
