BENIN CITY – The present government of Godwin Obaseki in Edo State is determined to correct all the anomalies hitherto associated with the Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB in the state. The Deputy Governor, Rt Hon Comrade Philip Shaibu made this declaration in Benin, Wednesday at a meeting with some select contractors across the three senatorial districts in the state. The meeting which took place in his office, Government House also had in attendance some board members of the agency.
Addressing the contractors, Shaibu said: “The era of having Edo SUBEB in the news for the wrong reason is over. The anti-graft agencies will not visit us here again, chasing contractors and board members about over fraud-related matters in SUBEB. Never. We want to leave behind a legacy of strong institutions that can drive our envisaged change in the socioeconomic lives of our people”.
According to him, the meeting was called following series of complaints from the contractors. He told them that “We are here to formally hear you out, aggregate your views to help government build a new SUBEB. Our intrest is to make sure jobs are done and well executed to specification to stand the test of time. We are happy when your companies are doing well. We are happy because this government belongs to you, we are here to make you happy but in doing this, we are not ready to compromise standards in the execution of contracts”.
The Deputy Governor listened carefully to various complaints from the contractors across the state most of them bothering on execution of jobs without payment. He allayed their fears, adding ” as a government, we shall put heads together and address the issue of delay in payment for job done. Very soon, you will all smile”. He assured the contractors that jobs for the second phase will soon commence.
