Following the disqualification of incumbent governor, Godwin Obaseki by the Prof. Jonathan Ayuba-led screening committee of the All Progressive Congress (APC) for the Edo state governorship primary election, some supporters of the party in the state have concluded arrangements to move with the governor, who recently resigned from APC, to another political party to seek reelection for a second term.

The APC had cited discrepancies in the names and certificates of Obaseki, but the governor maintained he was unjustly disqualified by the Prof. Ayuba-led committee despite “given them all the information they need”.

News of the disqualification however did not go down well with the APC members, who eagerly awaits outcome of the governor’s ongoing political consultations, as he is yet to pitch tent with a new party.

According to the supporters, Obaseki was disqualified mainly due to his rift with the now suspended chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomole, adding same names and credentials which was rejected by the screening panel were accepted in 2016.

The supporters maintained they are anxious over the next move of the ‘Wake and See’ governor, even as they boasted Obaseki would win a reelection for another four years.

“Anywhere Obaseki goes we will go with him, no matter the political party because he sure deserve a second term. With him, Edo state is seeing the light, and we will not go back to darkness.

While it was gathered Obaseki yesterday, met with some governors and chairman of the main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus in Abuja, the APC had since announced Imo state Governor, Hope Uzodinma to head a 13-man Edo primary election committee.

Obaseki has now joined the list of governors in the fourth republic, after Akinwumi Ambode of Lagos, Mallam Mala Kachala of Borno, and Dr Chinwoke Mbadiniju of Anambra state, to be denied a return ticket by his party.

Meanwhile, there has been an uneasy calm across the state, since the governor’s disqualification, and his subsequent resignation alongside his deputy, Philip Shaibu from the ruling APC, as residents are now seen in clusters discussing the development.

They expressed concerns over the security implications of the political tussle, which they attributed to the shut down of the state house of assembly for 14-Days, despite the management stating it “is as a result of the fumigation exercise to be carried out in the assembly complex at three (3) different times”.
