OWERRI : As part of the renewed efforts to rid the country of indecent sexual behaviours, the police in Imo state says the command has arrested three persons for engaging in homosexual activities.
The police spokesperson in the state, ASP Chris Onochie said in a statement in Owerri yesterday that two of the suspects were allegedly caught while soliciting for sex close to a high brow hotel in the state capital.
He gave their names as Kenneth Okoye and Ignatius Agu. ASP Onochie said the two gay suspects would be charged to court after due investigations to determinebtheir level of involvement in homosexuality.
He added that detectives in the command have also been given a marching order to fish out three other persons who had earlier been indicted for homosexual activities with a view to bringing them to justice.
He said the suspects, Onyeiwu Uche Stanley, Godfrey Akaeze and Sunday Owolabi have been on the police wanted list since January,2021.
The police image- maker said one of the suspects, Onyeiwu Uche Stanley and his partner were caught in the act on December 24,2020 at a hotel in Okigwe. He said while Stanley escaped arrest at the time, his partner was apprehended and handed over to police for investigation and propable prosecution.
” The suspect in question was eventually charged to court and later reminded in prison custody”, the statement added.
He said the command is determined to stem the rising cases of indecent sexual activities across the length and breath of the state, and appealed to members of the public with any useful information that might lead to the arrest of suspects to report to the Commissioner of Police or any nearest police station within and outside Imo state.
Same -sex marriage or relationship is considered a taboo and strictly forbidden in Nigerian communities. It’s also a criminal offence and offenders are liable to serve between 10 to 14 years in prison.
