BENIN CITY – Edo has continued to record more deaths of persons who have not been inoculated with the COVID-19 vaccines, as the state recorded another COVID-19-related death, bringing the total number of fatalities to 8.
The State COVID-19 Incident Manager, Dr. Andrew Obi, disclosed this after the daily virtual meeting of the State COVID-19 Taskforce, chaired by the state governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki.
The Incident Manager, who reiterated the need for all residents to get vaccinated against the deadly virus to remain healthy and alive, urged residents to leverage the opportunity of the second phase vaccination to get full protection against the COVID-19 virus.
He said the state in the last 48 hours vaccinated over 7200 persons, following the flag-off of the second phase vaccination exercise across the state by Governor Obaseki.
According to him, “Edo State, in the last 24 hours, recorded 45 new COVID-19 cases, 10 recoveries, and one more death. The new death, also an unvaccinated person, brings the total number of fatalities recorded in the third wave of the pandemic to 8.
“The new cases were confirmed from the 297 samples collected within the 24-hour timeframe, with 221active cases that are currently being managed at various treatment and isolation centres in the state.”
Obi continued: “It is imperative to state that all persons who have died from the virus in the third wave were unvaccinated, while over 96 percent of confirmed cases are those who were never vaccinated. This necessitates the need for everyone to get vaccinated in order to be protected against the virus.
“I, therefore, charge everyone to present themselves at the nearest vaccination centre within their communities to get vaccinated, as it is the safest way to defeat this common enemy of mankind.”
Reassuring the government’s commitment to vaccinate more Edo people in order to achieve herd immunity against the virus, the Incident Manager said the state is having continuous engagements with relevant stakeholders to increase vaccination uptake in the state.
Obi further stated that Edo has so far collected 7,392 samples and recorded 340 confirmed cases, with 110 recoveries since July 17, 2021, when the state started tracking the third wave of the virus.
