The Independent National Electoral Commission said it was Investigating a video of thousands of uncollected Permanent Voters Card allegedly discovered in a drainage at an estate in Rumuodara Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.
In a video posted on Twitter, a resident with the handle Momoh said the cards carried registration names of some communities in Obio/Akpor LGA.
He further said government officials were contacted to pick up the PVC:s.
An audio played in a popular Radio Station in Port Harcourt on Thursday morning and monitored by our correspondent mentioned names of some Rivers communities in the PVC’s.
“This is Iriebe. We have PVC:s for Iriebe, Okporo, Rumuodara–RD Road extension. Over 20 thousand PVC’s. It was buried in a drainage
“You can imagine how. We have unconfirmed reports that some governmentnt officials have been contacted,” a man stated.
To this end, INEC in a statement issued by its Administrative Secretary, Mr. Richter Alabraba said the matter has been reported to the police and other security agencies for necessary action.
The statement reads,”The viral video on social media showing Permanent Voters Cards allegedly discovered in a drainage system within Rumuodara axis of Obio/Akpor LGA refers.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Rivers State wishes to inform thebPublic that the viral video on the above issue has been reported to the Nigeria Police and other security agencies for investigation and further action.
“The outcome of this investigation will also be madepublic once concluded.
“The Commission will continue to work with the security agencies and well-meaning Nigerians to preserve the integrity of the Electoral processes.”
Also, the Public Relations Officer of INEC in Rivers State, Geraldine Ekelemu in a terse response to our correspondent on the telephone said “We are investigating.”
