The Edo State Agricultural Development Programme (ADP) have said no fewer than 6000 farmers are to undergo training on basic agric business skill in Edo State under the skill Development for Youth Employment. (SKYE).
The Edo ADP agricultural extension officer, Mr. Oladipo Ebenezer stated this on Monday during the flag-off of training workshop organized for farmers in Auchi, Edo.
Mr. Ebenezer said the training is being sponsored by the Germany International Cooperation Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), adding that the business skills training is in partnership with the Edo ADP.
The ADP officer said the training became imperative for farners to see farming as an agric business and for them to become an entrepreneur in the practice.
According to him, five states are to benefit from the training namely; Edo, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti and Cross River, adding that about 6000 farmers have already be selected in Edo to benifit from the five days training.
“Our mandate is to train 6000 farmers in Edo State, but so far we have train 4,000 farmers in Edo State.
“The idea is to train farmers on basic agric business on how to get good financial services and for them to see agriculture as a business that they can make profit.
“The training is also to equip them on basic skills on how to farm and the type of crops they are expected to farm at a particular season.
“The training is free, all the materials to be used during the training is free and at the end of the training, funds would be given to them to finance their agric business,” he said.
The President of All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Edo North chapter, Dr. Mohamned Abdulahi who spoke on behalf of the farmers thanked the German organisation and Edo ADP for the gesture.
Abdulahi urged the farmers to make themselves available for the five days training to enable them have first hand information on the agric business skill training so that they can apply them on their farming season.
