…fixes special session Dec. 28

The passage of Nigeria’s 2023 federal budget will have to wait a little longer as the final consideration for the N20.51 trillion budget could not proceed in both chambers of the National Assembly on Thursday.

The challenge, according to the leadership of both the Senate and the House of Representatives, had to do with alleged inherent problems created by the executive arm of government.

Senate President Ahmad Lawan said the Appropriations Committees of both the red and green chambers detected irreconcilable figures in the budget, adding, however, that the grey areas were reconciled with relevant members of the executive on Wednesday.

The draft budget proposal had to pass through a long cleaning process in the hands of the Appropriations Committees of both chambers of the National Assembly. As a result, it could not be submitted for consideration and passage on Thursday, Lawan said.

Meanwhile, the Senate and the House of Representatives both agreed to hold a special session on Wednesday, 28 December 2022 to consider and pass the budget and other critical bills, including the 2022 Finance Bill, the N819.5 billion 2022 supplementary budget, among others, the Senate president said.
