The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General YD Ahmed, has advised Corps Members to embrace Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme of the Scheme to avoid being caught up with the effects of unemployment.
Ahmed stated this at the Lagos State NYSC Orientation Camp in Iyana-Ipaja while addressing Corps Members.
According to the Director General, there are different avenues where Corps Members can access loans without interest but their passion in self-reliance is a necessary criterion, especially in this era of scarce salary jobs, adding that many of their predecessors that acquired vocational skills while in camp are now business owners in different vocations across the country.
“Don’t take the Skills Acquisition of NYSC as a joke. Start thinking because the opportunities are there with many stakeholders to give you loans without interest,” he said.
For the skill acquisition training, Ahmed advised Corps members to choose a skill of their choice, learn a skill and after the camp, engage in post-camp training so that they can be self-reliant and employers of labour.
Whatever training you are given in camp, please don’t joke with it because you will soon see the importance”, he said.
While urging Corps members to obey all the rules and regulations camp in order to become good leaders and responsible role models in the society, the DG advised them not to joke with whatever training they are given in camp.
He advised the Corps Members to avoid the negative use of the social media and also warned them that any unauthorized journey by any Corps Member would attract sanctions.
General Ahmed urged them to always use the NYSC distress call centre in case of any emergency.
The NYSC Lagos State Coordinator, Mrs Yetunde Baderinwa in her brief said the Corps Members have imbibed the spirit of nationalism, dedication and absolute resolve to serve their fatherland.
“All Camp Officials are doing exceptionally well in the discharge of their assigned duties and the synergy among officials is quite impressive”, she said.
A total of 3,867 Corps Members comprising 1,292 males and 2,575 females were registered in camp as at the time of DG’s visit.
