The Ikoyi Golf Club is gearing up to host golf enthusiasts for the second edition of the South African Golf Tournament on Sunday, April 28.

In partnership with Crossflex International, the South African Consulate General in Lagos is organizing the event, which celebrates the 30th anniversary of freedom and democracy, as well as 30 years of unbroken diplomatic ties between South Africa and Nigeria.

Tolu Adesemowo, Managing Director of Crossflex and event coordinator, anticipates over 100 players to participate. This tournament follows a successful debut last year under the banner of the South Africa Consul General Cup.

Reflecting on last year’s event, Adesemowo highlighted its positive impact, noting, “The previous edition left a lasting impression on the players, fostering a sense of enjoyment and camaraderie, particularly within the diplomatic community.

“There was a compelling need for it to make a return for the freshness it brings to golf in Ikoyi and the diplomatic circle.”

At the Ikoyi Club 1938, the tournament will showcase top amateur players, including both male and female participants, who will compete under the Stableford scoring system. The competition format will feature a “short-gun” tee-off, allowing all players to begin simultaneously from each of the 18 holes to efficiently manage the large number of participants.

Sponsored by Geregu Power PLC, Qshop, Pepsi, Acutech, Kaldi Africa, and Simplygolf apparel, the event guarantees an exhilarating 18-hole Stableford game, with prizes available for both male and female golfers.

Professor Bobby Moroe, the Consul General of South Africa in Lagos, conveyed his excitement for collaborating with Crossflex International Nigeria Limited.

“We are excited and proud to partner with Crossflex International, one of the reputable private golfing agencies in Nigeria. Sports diplomacy, in particular, golf, is a crescendo to harness partnerships and promote enduring relationships amongst the golfing community,” Moore said.

As an integral component of the South African Week Celebrations in Nigeria, the South African Golf Tournament holds significant importance in marking the 30th anniversary of South Africa’s independence following the end of apartheid.

Furthermore, the event will feature additional prizes, including awards for the longest drive, nearest to the pin, and the 30th place finish, enhancing the overall excitement and appeal of the day.
