It was another black day in Benue State on Tuesday as six-months old baby and six other members of a family in Uchen community of Benue State were killed. Several other persons were injured in the gruesome attack on the community.

Gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen invaded the village along Makurdi-Naka Road in Gwer-West Local Government Area of Benue State in the early hours of the attack and open fire on the residents, killing seven people, while others who managed to escape death did so with serious injuries.

The state police spokeswoman, Catherine Anene, confirmed the incident, saying security personnel had been deployed in the area to stop further attacks.

The state commissioner for information, culture and tourism, Michael Inalegwu, expressed worry over the violent attack on the community that wiped out the family of seven people by suspected militia herdsmen.

He said the herdsmen continue to attack and kill Benue residents without any form of provocation.

Reports quoted a resident of the community who blamed security personnel of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) who, despite close to the scene of the incident failed to repel the attackers.

This is coming days after the Benue State Deputy Governor, Benson Abounu, said the security personnel in the state wait for attacks to happen before they react instead of proactively preventing the killing of innocent residents of the state.
