Award-winning actor Yul Edochie on Tuesday lent his voice to the growing calls on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to release the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in custody for about two years now.

The actor took to Twitter to remind the President Tinubu how he (Tinubu) fought for democracy for decades, while also acknowledging the President as a builder and supporter of men and women.

“To our Leader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, @officialABAT GCFR. The Jagaban. A man who has fought for democracy for 3 decades, A builder & supporter of men & women,” Edochie tweeted via his handle @yulEdochie.

“My President, please release Nnamdi Kanu. A humble request from your son,” he tweeted.

Kanu had it rough during the Muhammadu Buhari Presidency for calling for an independent state of Biafra. IPOB, which he leads, was proscribed by the Federal Government and declared a terrorist organization.

About two years ago, while travelling to Kenya from his residence in Britain, Kanu, who holds dual citizenship (Nigeria and Britain), was arrested and brought back to Nigeria to answer to charges of treasonable felony. He has been in custody since then.

Before Yul Edochie’s appeal, many prominent Nigerians had pleaded with former President Muhammadu Buhari, and now with President Tinubu, to free Kanu.

But Edochie’s appeal has not gone down well with some netizens.

“That’s the problem with you people, when the guy was everywhere cursing and making threats to federal government no one cautioned him. Now you all want him out. You guys are high on hypocrisy. Damn,” commented a Twitter user @balogin.

Another user, tweeting via @Captainbee, said, “That guy will make naija especially the south eastern part ungovernable so it’s best to keep him locked up for now.”
