Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has expressed his deep sympathy for the residents of Patigi in Patigi Local Government Area of the state following a tragic boat accident that claimed numerous lives and left many others missing.

According to reliable sources, the boat mishap occurred at Egbu village in the Patigi Local Government Area, resulting in the loss of approximately 100 lives. The incident took place on Monday when the victims were returning from a wedding ceremony held in the neighboring Egboti village in Niger State.

Reports indicate that around 50 bodies have been recovered from the river where the boat capsised. It is believed that the boat was carrying over 300 passengers on its return journey from the wedding venue before the unfortunate incident occurred at Egbu village.

The spokesperson of the Kwara State Police Command, Okasanmi Ajayi, confirmed the incident on Tuesday and stated that the command has instructed the divisional police officer in Patigi to gather more information about the accident.

Governor AbdulRazaq, through his chief press secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, expressed his profound sadness upon receiving news of the boat accident involving numerous individuals. In an official statement, the government conveyed the governor’s heartfelt condolences to the affected communities, namely Ebu, Dzakan, Kpada, Kuchalu, and Sampi, as well as to individuals from other states who were affected by this tragedy. The governor offered prayers to Almighty Allah, asking for solace for the souls of the victims.

Meanwhile, Governor AbdulRazaq continues to closely monitor the ongoing rescue operations initiated since Monday night, aimed at locating any possible survivors. He commended the vigilance and quick response of Etsu Patigi, His Royal Highness Alhaji Ibrahim Umar Bologi II, and other local government authorities for their efforts to save as many lives as possible in the aftermath of the accident, demonstrating their commitment to assisting potential survivors.

The governor’s office assured the public that all possible measures are being taken to aid the rescue operations and provide support to the affected communities. Governor AbdulRazaq emphasises the importance of prioritising the well-being and safety of the people, pledging to exhaust all available resources to alleviate the suffering caused by this devastating incident.
