Nigeria’s former President Olusegun Obasanjo has voiced his strong criticism against both past and present leaders of the country for failing in several crucial aspects of life that affect Nigerians.

Obasanjo, who made these remarks during the launch of a book titled “Reclaiming the Jewel of Africa” authored by Olusegun Aganga, former Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, emphasized that good leadership is the key to unlocking and overcoming the obstacles that hinder Nigeria from achieving its divine potential.

The book provides a documentation of Aganga’s experiences both within and outside the government, offering recommendations that are vital for Nigeria and the entire African continent to rise to enviable heights.

Obasanjo praised Aganga as an exceptional writer and stressed the importance of acknowledging past failures as a starting point for charting a new course for the country.

He expressed disappointment with Nigeria’s performance over the last 63 years, highlighting how the country has not met the expectations of its citizens, Africa, and the global community.

The former president pointed out that ego, self-centredness, ethnic and religious biases, as well as a lack of comprehension of the world and development have hindered the progress of the nation.

He further stressed the need to link peace, security, democracy, and prosperity together as they are interrelated and must be addressed collectively.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, who was also present at the event, praised Aganga’s book and lauded his performance as the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment under the Jonathan administration.

He recalled how Aganga’s efforts in seeking foreign investment paid off, making Nigeria a top destination for foreign direct investment and making it one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa at that time.

Aganga, on his part, highlighted that both Africa and Nigeria’s political systems are still heavily dependent on tribalism, religion, and money. He stressed the need for a balance between merit and federal character, ensuring that the rights and powers that money should not influence, such as votes, are protected through comprehensive laws and rigorous enforcement.

Discussions at the book launch shed light on the pressing issues affecting Nigeria’s development and the essential role of effective leadership in driving positive change for the nation and the continent as a whole.
