Nigeria’s female basketball team, D’Tigress conquered Senegal to win the 2023 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Championship at the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda on Saturday.

The victory qualifies them to battle for a spot at the 2024 Olympics women’s basketball tournament.

D’Tigress have now won the FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Championship for the fourth consecutive time.

The D’Tigress, extending their unbeaten run to 23 games, triumphed over the 11-time African champions 84-74 to secure their sixth championship.

With a dominant performance, the Rena Wakama- led side had a nine-point lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Senegalese kept it close in the second quarter with a 24-21 margin for D’Tigress extending their lead to 12 going to the halftime break.

At the second half resumption, the Senegal reduced the deficit to five with a third quarter 26-19

Nevertheless, D’Tigress won the game by 10 points at the fourth quarter,

Senegal have lost to the Nigeria national women’s basketball team in four Afrosbasket finals (2005, 2017, 2019, and 2023).

D’Tigress new Head Coach, Rena Wakama, is the first female to guide the team to the Afrobasket tournament and won the championship title.
