The Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS) is seeking the support of the United Nations (UN) and other institutions, towards a quick restoration of constitutional order in Niger Republic.

ECOWAS has also alerted its standby force to be on the alert to restore constitutional order in Niger.

These resolutions emanated from an extraordinary summit of ECOWAS on the Niger Republic, held in Abuja on Thursday.

Thursday’s summit followed a similar event convened on the 30th of July after the ousting of Niger’s President Mohamed Bazoum, in a military coup, on July 26 by the military.

Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, said the body had observed that all diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis had been defiantly repelled by the military leadership of the Republic of Niger.

Touray restated the regional group’s condemnation of the “attempted coup d’état and the continued illegal detention of President Mohammed Bouzum, his family, and members of his government.”

According to him, the body further resolved to uphold all measures and principles agreed upon by the extraordinary summit held on Niger on July 30th.

While keeping diplomatic options open, ECOWAS had directed the Committee of the Chiefs of Defence Staff to activate its standby force for readiness to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger, Toure said

While calling on the African Union to endorse all the decisions taken by the ECOWAS authority on the situation in Niger, the West African bloc warned member states whose actions are directly or indirectly hindering the peaceful resolution of the crisis in Niger about the consequences for their action before the community.

Also speaking after the summit, Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, who is Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority, said no option was off the table, including the use of force as a last resort.
