They claimed that the area had been isolated, due to the recent collapse of the culvert over a channel of canal, caused by heavy flooding that recently rocked some parts of Effurun and Warri.

While calling on the State government to come to their aid, Mr. Onome, a resident in the area, expressed the pain, difficulty, and fear he and other residents go through every day while climbing on a temporary wooden ladder, which served as a mini bridge that helps residents gain access to the other side of the road.

“An old woman almost fell into the canal, while climbing on the ladder that linked to the other half of the close, but for the quick intervention of a mobile policeman that is stationed to guide the area,” he stated.

A mobile police officer who spoke on the grounds of anonymity, explained: “The situation is so pitiable that I have to help residents, mostly children and aged, climb through the emergency bridge, as it has formed part of my security duties here.”

A nursing mother, who also did not state her name, said: ” The collapse of the canal has made mobility more strenuous for me as I now walk a longer distance to access Jakpa Road.

“Climbing through a shaky wooden bridge with my baby is risky, knowing that a woman almost fell into the canal, a few days ago,” she added.

Another resident, who owned a car, hoped for the timely reconstruction of the canal as he explained, saying: “Cost of living for me and my family has increased even though income has not increased.

“We now take a longer route, through Stephens Church, or Church of God mission, Praise Center road, to reach our house, making me incur more expense over buying of fuel that currently sells at a high price.
