…urges team to begin NWFL with winning mentality

The Executive Chairman, Edo State Sports Commission, Olympian Yusuf Alli has heaped praises on Edo Queens over their superlative performance and emergence as champions of the 6th edition of Sheroes Pre-season tournament.

The heartbeat state’s Sports Commission boss gave the commendation shortly after Emem Essien’s 37th minute goal earned the Obaseki girls a 1-0 victory over Naija Ratels to lift the Sheroes Cup for the second time, saying that the impressive performance of Edo Queens is highly commendable.

Recall that Edo Queens won the maiden edition of the Pre-season tournament with late coach Gabriel Adejor in 2019.

“Let me congratulate and thank you girls for your brilliance.The coaches and staff, we appreciate all of you.
We are proud of you, having brought honour home. You have performed excellently, by playing five matches, winning all. I urge you to take this same winning mentality to the league when it kicks off on November 15 against FC Robo in Benin,” Yusuf said.

The Edo Sports Commission boss however advised the Queens to remain disciplined and hardworking, as they return triumphantly to Benin for final preparations for the new football season.

Moses Aduku-managed Edo Queens were invincible throughout in the tournament, winning all five games, lifted the Cup and cleared all the individual awards as well.

The match winner against Naija Ratels, Emem Essien, emerged the highest goal scorer of the tournament with five goals, while Suliat Abideen, was voted the Most Valuable Player (MVP). Etim Inyene went home with the Golden gloves as tournament best goalkeeper.

On the road to winning the 2023 Sheroes Cup, Edo Queens defeated Ekiti Queens 4-1 in their first match, and humiliated Dannaz FC 5-0 in their second match. They continued with impressive performance, brushing aside Honey Baggers 4-0, before beating Sunshine Queens 2-0, and Naija Ratels 1-0 to emerge champions with 16 goals.
