As part of measures to raise awareness of the impact of diabetes in Delta State, the Delta State Ministry of Health carried out free screening on 46 persons for diabetes.

The Ministry in collaboration with the World Health Organization and other partners organized the free screening exercise for diabetes at the Anioma Market, Okpanam and also a sensitization rally from the Prof Chike Edozien Secretariat through Okpanam Road to the Market.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, on Tuesday stated that to guide against serious and potentially life-threatening complications from diabetes, people should make themselves available for screening for the disease so as to catch it early and commence early treatment.

Dr. Onojaeme, who was represented by Dr. Rita Opene, the State Non-Communicable Diseases Programme Coordinator, Ministry of Health, emphasized the importance of physical activity in the management of the disease.

“For people at risk of type 2 diabetes, knowing your risk and what to do is important to support prevention, early diagnosis and timely treatment, while for those living with diabetes, awareness and access to the correct information and best available medicines and tools to support self-care is vital to delay or prevent complication,” Dr. Onojaeme stressed.

The theme for the World Diabetes Day 2023 is “Access to Diabetes Care” and the campaign is focused on delaying or preventing type 2 diabetes and diabetes-related complications, with the slogan “Know your risk, know your response”.

World Diabetes Day is a global occasion in which people with diabetes, health professionals, diabetes advocates, media, and the general public and government organizations unite to raise awareness of disease.
