The Chairman, Edo State Football Association, Fred Newton Erhunmunse has congratulated Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen, who was on Monday night in Marrakech, Morocco crowned the 2023 Africa Footballer of the year.

The elated Edo Football Association (EFA) boss said the former Golden eaglets Forward, and Edo State born Napoli striker deserve the crown following his superlative performance for club and country in the last twelve months.

“Congratulations to Victor Osimhen for bringing home the Africa player of the year award to Nigeria since 1999 after Kanu Nwankwo last won it for Nigeria. I’m happy for the young man who is from Edo State, he has done well for Napoli and Nigeria in recent times.

“On behalf of Edo State Football Association, congratulations to Victor Osimhen, Asisat Oshoala and Chiamaka Nnadozie for doing Nigeria proud at the CAF Awards.

“Osimhen is now the first Edo born footballer to be voted the best footballer in Africa, we are happy,” Fred stated.

The EFA Chairman further expressed, “This is huge for Victor Osimhen, he was crowned the CAF young player in 2015 after winning the Cadet World Cup, and now at the senior level, this is massive for the young Nigerian, Edo State is proud of him.

“It is my prayers for him to stay fit, focused and go on to win the AFCON title for Nigeria in Ivory coast next year.”

Victor Osimhen who is now the fifth Nigerian to be voted the CAF player of the year, defeated Mohammed Salah of Egypt and Achraf Hakimi of Morocco to lift the crown.
