World Record holder Tobi Amusan isn’t just back to winning ways as usual, but she’s back to her best after kicking off her 2024 season with a new African Record (AR) for a ground-breaking win in Astana.
Running in her first competition of the year, Tobi Amusan blazed to an exceptional win and broke a 25-year-old African Record in the process.
Amusan first clocked 7.91s for an effortless win in the qualifying 60m Hurdles heat, before coming back less than an hour later to blast to an impeccable time of 7.77s for victory in the final at the World Athletics Indoor Tour in Astana, thus defeating a stacked field that includes former world champion Nia Ali.
She smashed Glory Alozie’s previous AR and Nigerian Record of 7.82s set in 1999 and propelled her to second on the world list behind Devynne Charlton’s 7.75s.
Further, it is her fastest season opener and makes a bold statement of the form she’s currently in ahead of the World Indoor Championships and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which she’ll be gunning to win both titles for the first time in her career.
Since the end of the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, where she fell short of defending her world title, Amusan has been undefeated in her races, highlighted by successfully defending her Diamond League trophy for the third consecutive year.
Her convincing and record-breaking win in Astana proves she may be in a better shape than when she ran the 100m Hurdles World Record (WR) in 2022, and Susanna Kallur’s 60m Hurdles WR of 7.68s may be under threat by the Nigerian.
