The Federal Government has launched an initiative to develop a comprehensive National Land Transportation Policy (NLTP) in a bid to transform Nigeria’s land transport sector and address existing inefficiencies. This move aims to tackle the challenges faced by land transport and pave the way for sustainable growth within the sector.

During a stakeholders’ validation forum held in Abuja, Sen. Said Ahmed Alkali, the Minister of Transportation, emphasized the critical role of land transport in Nigeria’s overall transportation landscape. He highlighted the urgent need for a transformative policy framework that would alleviate congestion, enhance connectivity in both urban and rural areas, and foster a sustainable and inclusive transport system.

“Land is the most burdened in the transport and logistics value chain, hence the need for a policy that would meet the goals of Nigerians,” the Minister said.

The forum, attended by key stakeholders from various sectors, focused on refining and validating the draft NLTP document. Sen. Alkali stressed that the policy is not merely a document but a vision for a more efficient and interconnected transport system that serves the needs of the Nigerian people while driving economic growth.

The draft NLTP provides a comprehensive assessment of current challenges in the land transport sector and proposes strategic responses to address them. It incorporates key considerations such as climate change, capacity building, and inclusive transportation. Additionally, the policy outlines actionable implementation strategies to prioritize seamless integration between different modes of transport.

“The National Land Transport Policy is not just a document; it is a vision for a more efficient, interconnected, and sustainable transport system that serves the needs of our people and propels economic growth.

“The draft NLTP provides a comprehensive assessment of current challenges and proposes strategic responses to enhance the sector, incorporating key considerations such as climate change, capacity building, and inclusive transportation. The policy also outlines actionable implementation strategies that prioritize seamless integration between different modes of transport,” the minister stated.

Highlighting the collaborative nature of the policy-making process, Sen. Alkali urged stakeholders to contribute their diverse perspectives and expertise. He emphasized the importance of collective efforts in shaping a modern, responsive, and inclusive land transportation system in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The launch of the National Land Transportation Policy (NLTP) by the Federal Government holds significant implications for Nigeria’s land transport sector and the broader economy. By acknowledging the critical role of land transport and addressing existing inefficiencies, the NLTP sets the stage for improved efficiency and connectivity within the transportation network. This could lead to reduced congestion, smoother flow of goods and people, and ultimately contribute to economic growth.

Moreover, the emphasis on sustainability and inclusivity in the NLTP suggests a commitment to addressing environmental concerns and ensuring that transportation services are accessible to all segments of society. This focus on inclusivity could lead to enhanced mobility for marginalized communities and contribute to greater social and economic equity.

This collaborative approach could foster a sense of ownership and commitment among stakeholders, increasing the likelihood of successful implementation and impact. It also has the potential to stimulate economic growth, promote sustainability, and enhance social inclusion across Nigeria.
