The 2024 World Water Day theme: ”Water for Peace” is aimed at advocating that for all to unite around water, use water for peace, laying foundations of a more stable and prosperous tomorrow.
World Water Day is celebrated annually on March 22, with emphasis on highlighting the significance of the availability of water in our world, and stressing the importance of water while creating awareness of the invaluable use of freshwater.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), about 2.2 billion people globally still live without safely managed drinking water, including 115 million people who drink surface water.
The effect of unhealthy water in the body system can lead to the rise of illnesses and diseases.
The World Bank in 2022, revealed that water related disasters have dominated the list of disasters over the past 50 years and account for 70% of all deaths related to natural disasters.
This connotes that there should be a thorough awareness on making use of clean and safe water always. Government and other stakeholders involved should make clean and healthy pipe borne water available for residents even in rural and remote areas.
The theme “Water for Peace”, reveals that water can create peace and spark conflict. Peace is ensured when there is an availability of healthy water resources, while conflict can occur when there is no availability of water and there is a strict competition to sustain the little available.
Water can also lead to prosperity, lead people out of crisis, as well as foster a healthy environment.
In commemoration of the global celebration, the News Agency is Nigeria (NAN), revealed that the Lagos State Government unveiled a new WASH policy with technical support from United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, representing the State Governor, His Excellency, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, mentioned that the adoption of the policy is a step towards ensuring universal access to clean water and sanitation.
“This comprehensive policy outlines a holistic approach to water management, encompassing strategies for conservation, pollution, preservation and equitable distribution.
“By implementing the provisions of WASH policy, we reaffirm our commitment to leave no one behind in our quest for water security and peace.
“In our pursuit of water security and sustainability, it is imperative that we embrace the principles of inclusivity and equity.
“By addressing water scarcity and inequalities in access, we can mitigate conflicts and build a more peaceful and just society,” Wahab said.
Lastly, cleaning up the environment and constantly treating unclean water would enable a safe water for usage and guarantee a disease free environment.
