In collaboration with the Edo State Ministry of Health, the Edo State Health Insurance Commission (EDHIC) successfully organised its quarterly program, “Getfit with EDOHIS”, focusing on sexual health.

The event which was attended by civil servants from various MDAs and distinguished personnel from different sectors of the economy took place at Imaguero Secondary School, Benin City, the Edo State capital.

The “Getfit with EDOHIS” program is an initiative aimed at promoting health and wellness among the citizens of Edo State. The focus on sexual health this quarter is a testament to the commission’s commitment to addressing various aspects of health and wellbeing.

The program commenced with morning exercises, which included dance fitness routines that got the participants moving and energised. Different activities and games also took place amid an engaging and exciting atmosphere, with special prizes awarded to the winners of each game.

One of the participants, who preferred to remain anonymous, expressed appreciation for the program, stating, “EDOHIS is doing a great job. They have been very consistent. This program is a constant reminder to always keep in shape. I’ve benefitted greatly from it, and I know many people who have benefitted as well. People are getting free medical screenings here, and that’s great.”

The Commissioner of Digital Economy, Science and Technology, Edo State, Ogbeide Ifaluyi-Isibor, was also in attendance and praised the initiative, stating, “It is very engaging and exciting, and I’m happy to see people come out on a Saturday morning to work out and exercise because it’s a culture that we’re not very used to down here. Now we’re seeing that EDOHIS is encouraging people to do some exercise, lighten up their moods, and improve their health, I think it’s a good thing.”

Ifaluyi-Isibor, who is also registered with the Edo State Health Insurance Scheme, further emphasised the importance of health insurance.

“I think everybody should have insurance, and I’m so appreciative of our governor, His Excellency, Governor Godwin Obaseki, for granting pensioners free health insurance in Edo State. This is unprecedented and it is happening nowhere else. All over the world, people pay for insurance. So for people in Edo State to have it for free, it’s a remarkable achievement, and I want to encourage all Edo people to enroll,” he said.

Maristopes Nigeria, a sexual and reproductive health organization, partnered with EDOHIS to provide consultations and distribute free contraceptives for men and women. This focus on sexual health within the “Getfit with EDOHIS” program highlights EDOHIS’s commitment to promoting overall well-being for Edo State residents.

The event also featured free medical screenings, which were availed by the participants. The screenings covered a range of health parameters, including blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), and blood sugar levels.

The Edo State Health Insurance Commission is a step in the right direction and at the forefront of promoting health insurance and initiatives like “Getfit with EDOHIS” in the state. By encouraging people to prioritize their health and well-being, the commission is helping to create a healthier and more productive population.
