The Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo has hailed Edo Queens ahead of their last group match against Mamelodi Sundown of South Africa in the ongoing 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League in Casablanca, Morocco.
Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to Edo State Governor, made the disclosure in an official statement on Friday.
Okpebholo praised the Edo Queens for their achievements so far and charged them to beat the South Africans to enable them lead Group B into the semifinals.
The Governor assured them of his continuous support, as they represent the state and Nigeria in Morocco.
Governor Okpebholo said his administration is in solidarity with the girls who are representing the State and the Nation at the Confederation of Africa Football Women’s Champions League in far away Morocco.
The statement read, “I think the girls might be worried about the change of leadership in Edo State, but I want them to know that we are with them.
“I have been briefed, and I know our team is in Morocco doing well. So, we will not abandon them. We are aware of the exploits, and I urge them to continue to dominate.
“My message to Edo Queens is that they have nothing to worry about. We are solidly behind them. We want our girls to beat Sundown on Saturday and win for me.
“Go ahead to also win the Cup and bring it to your fatherland. Sports will surely be given a top priority it deserves in my Government.”
The Edo Queens will engage in a fierce battle with the defending champions Mamelody Sundown Girls in the last group game of the CAF Women Champions League on Saturday, in Casablanca, Morocco. The match is scheduled to kickoff at 6:00pm.
The Nigeria Women Premier League champions, Edo Queens began with a 3-0 victory over Commercial Bank of Ethiopia with Emem Essien, Folashade Ijamilusi and Goodness Osigwe scoring for the Queens.
Edo Queens ended their second match in a goalless stalemate with Masar FC of Egypt on Wednesday to lead Group B. They need a draw to qualify for the semifinals.
