Benin City – Edo State Governor, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo has ordered indefinite suspension of the operations of the Public Safety Response Team (PSRT) following multiple complaints of extortion, harassment, and unruly behavior by its members.

Governor Monday Okpebholo ordered the suspension, citing concerns over deviations from the team’s original mandate, which was to maintain public order, protect public infrastructure, and curb illegal activities such as street trading and unauthorized parking.

In a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, Esq., the government reaffirmed its commitment to law and order and emphasized that misconduct within state-sanctioned operations would not be tolerated.

“The Government remains committed to upholding law and order and will not tolerate any deviation from the original purpose for which the Team was set up, which is to help maintain public order, assist in protecting public infrastructure and curb illegal activities like street trading and illegal parking in our communities,” the statement said.

The statement added that a comprehensive review of the PSRT’s structure, recruitment processes, and personnel training will be conducted to ensure the highest standards of professionalism, fairness, and respect for human dignity in all government activities.

“A thorough review of the Team’s structure and operations, particularly recruitment processes and training of its personnel will be conducted to ensure that all government-sanctioned activities in the State reflect the highest standard of professionalism, fairness, orderliness and respect for human dignity.”
