Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has approved the payment of long-overdue gratuities to pensioners, addressing a backlog that dates back to 2012.

The government has commenced the disbursement of N1 billion as the initial phase of payments, fulfilling a promise to improve the welfare of retired civil servants.

The governor affirmed his administration’s determination to honour those who dedicated their careers to public service, stating that the delay that the retirees faced was unacceptable.

He assured that payments would continue in phases until all outstanding entitlements are cleared.

The Governor pledged a transparent and equitable process, with beneficiaries receiving their gratuities in batches following proper verification.

Emphasising that this is just the beginning, Okpebholo reiterated his commitment to restoring the dignity of pensioners and preventing future delays.

The announcement has been met with relief among retirees, including Mr. Patrick Edobor, a former school principal, who described the payment as a long-awaited lifeline.
