The Joint Tax Board (JTB), the top coordinating body for tax authorities across Nigeria has hiked the cost of vehicle number plates and driver’s licences across the country.
The price hike which was contained in an advertorial published in a national newspaper will begin on Sunday June 8, 2025,
JTB attributed the increase to the addition of enhanced security features and a rise in production costs.
A standard motor vehicle driver’s licence will now cost N15,000 for three years and N21,000 for five years. For motorcycles and tricycles, a three-year licence will cost N7,000 and the five-year option of N11,000.
The new pricing for number plates varies by category. Standard number plates for private and commercial vehicles are now fixed at N30,000. Articulated vehicles will attract a fee of N90,000, while dealer plates will cost N100,000.
Out-of-series number plates are now set at N150,000, and fancy number plates will go for as much as N400,000. Government vehicles will pay N80,000 for standard plates and N120,000 for the fancy version.
For motorcycles, a standard number plate now costs N12,000. The fancy version costs N50,000. Government motorcycles will be charged N20,000 for standard plates and N50,000 for fancy ones.
The JTB stressed that the new prices apply nationwide and directed all State Internal Revenue Services and Motor Vehicle Licensing Authorities to comply.
Nigerians have been advised to use official channels for their applications. These include the National Vehicle Identification System portal at nvis.frsc.gov.ng and state licensing offices.
The public is also warned to avoid touts and to ensure they pay only the approved fees. Further information is available on the Federal Road Safety Corps website at www.frsc.gov.ng and at licensing authorities across the country.
