The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has criticised the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) over the delayed English Language examination in the ongoing Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations.

In a statement issued on Thursday, NANS’ National PRO, Adeyemi Ajasa, said shifting the paper from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. posed serious risks to students’ safety.

Ajasa said the delay, reportedly caused by leaked questions, reflected WAEC’s “shocking insensitivity and gross disregard” for students’ welfare, particularly those in rural areas.

“The postponement of the English Language exam to 7 p.m. undermines students’ psychological readiness and jeopardises their safety, especially considering the insecure routes many have to travel,” the statement read.

NANS said repeated leaks expose deep flaws in WAEC’s security structure, calling for accountability and reform.

“We demand that WAEC identify and prosecute those responsible, implement stricter security protocols, and offer a public apology to affected students and families. Measures must also be taken to protect students returning home late,” Ajasa stated.

He warned that NANS would escalate the matter if WAEC fails to take immediate and decisive action.
