The Edo State Government has appealed to traders for cooperation ahead of the planned renovation of the fire-damaged Oba Market, fulfilling a promise made by Governor Monday Okpebholo.
The appeal was made by Hon. Okoyomoh Bawa Mohammed, Managing Director of the Edo State Public Building and Maintenance Agency, during a visit to the market.
He was accompanied by the Head of Local Government Administration (HOLGA) of Oredo Local Government Area, Dr O.O. Igbinigie.
Hon. Okoyomoh explained that the temporary closure of the market was necessary to allow for the redevelopment process, and urged traders to cooperate to ensure smooth execution of the project.
The contract, awarded to Astral Standard Vision Ltd, is expected to transform the market into a modern, world-class commercial centre in line with Governor Okpebholo’s urban renewal agenda.
He assured the traders that upon completion of the project, all would be reallocated to their respective shops, ensuring both continuity and fairness.
He also reiterated the governor’s commitment to modernising public infrastructure across the state to meet current standards and improve livelihoods.
Responding on behalf of the traders, the Iyekhi (market leader) affirmed their willingness to cooperate with the government. “We have heard, and we are ready to support the process for the greater good,” she stated.
Despite the anticipated disruption, many traders expressed optimism about the long-term benefits of the redevelopment. Both the state agency and the contractor have pledged to minimise inconvenience and deliver the project as scheduled.
