The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Dr. Joseph Ikpea of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Barrister Omosede Igbinedion as winners of the Edo Central Senatorial and Ovia Federal Constituency by-elections, respectively, conducted on Saturday, Aug. 16.
In Edo Central, INEC Returning Officer, Prof. Kingsley Omo-Iwoze, announced the results at the collation centre in Ubiaja, Esan South-East Local Government Area. Ikpea polled a total of 105,129 votes to defeat the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Joe Okojie, who garnered 15,146 votes.
Shortly after his declaration, Ikpea thanked God and the people of Edo Central for the mandate, describing it as a vote of confidence in Governor Monday Okpebholo and the APC’s developmental agenda. He praised the governor’s leadership, the APC campaign team, and pledged to focus on legislation and interventions in infrastructure, youth empowerment, education, healthcare, and the strengthening of traditional institutions.
In Ovia Federal Constituency, comprising Ovia South-West and Ovia North-East LGAs, INEC Returning Officer, Clement Ighodaro, declared Igbinedion victorious with 77,053 votes. Her closest rival from the PDP secured 3,838 votes, while the ADC candidate finished third with 925 votes.
Igbinedion, who first represented the constituency in the House of Representatives in 2015, expressed gratitude to her supporters and promised effective representation that would deliver real impact to the people of Ovia.
