Abuja — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s elections against misinformation, disinformation, and cyber threats.
This was stated as an INEC delegation participated in a two-day regional workshop on “Protecting Elections in the Information Environment” held in Abuja from August 27–28, 2025.
The forum, convened by International IDEA in partnership with the African Union (AU) and the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC), with EU support through the SPEC project, brought together electoral stakeholders across Africa.
INEC’s team, led by Hajia Aminetu Shiaka, Assistant Director in the ICT Department, included Makanjuola Taiwo, Patience George, and Otu Fidelia Udumma.
Shiaka stressed the importance of securing election information systems, while Taiwo warned against the dangers of false narratives. George highlighted proactive steps by Electoral Management Bodies (EMBs), and Udumma emphasised that social media misinformation was now as critical as polling-day irregularities.
Participants agreed on the need for regional cooperation to address cross-border threats. INEC reaffirmed its readiness to adopt innovative strategies that bolster resilience, transparency, and public trust in elections.
