BENIN CITY – Prominent leaders of Benin extraction in Edo State have stressed the urgent need for the Benin-speaking people to close ranks, unite, and pursue a common front that will guarantee progress and sustainable development in Edo South Senatorial District.
The leaders made the call at the maiden edition of the Benin Unity Summit 2025, themed “One Voice, One Vision, One Benin,” held in Benin City.
Former Senator Roland Owie emphasized that the survival and growth of the Benin nation lies in rediscovering its cherished values of honesty, love, and moral uprightness.
He urged women to continue interceding for the Benin nation through prayers, noting their pivotal role in sustaining the community’s spiritual strength.
Senator Ehigie Uzamere called on all sons and daughters of Edo South to shun hatred, jealousy, and divisive tendencies, while showing respect to the revered throne of the Oba of Benin.
“We must stand in harmony and protect the dignity of our traditional institution, which remains the symbol of our identity,” he said.
Curreynt senator, Neda Imasuen, warned that the failure of individuals to make sacrifices for the collective good is hindering progress.
He urged Benins to forgive past wrongs, embrace reconciliation, and “speak with one voice” in order to earn respect among other ethnic nationalities.
Also speaking, Owere Dickson Imasogie called for collective responsibility in promoting Benin heritage, citing his personal example of preserving indigenous identity in naming his children without foreign influences.
The convener of the summit, Earl Osaro Onaiwu, clarified that the forum was not a political gathering but a movement to foster love, unity, and development across Edo South.
He lamented the neglect of local governments in the district as people troop to urban centers, stressing the need to redirect attention to grassroots development.
Former House of Representatives member, Hon. Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma, who outlined the group’s objectives, said the summit was designed to serve as a rallying point for dialogue and collective action on infrastructure, culture, and heritage.
He noted that working with government, traditional leaders, and community organizations will ensure a stronger Benin nation.
The summit ended with a resounding call on all Benins, home and abroad, to put aside differences, embrace unity, and forge a common front to reposition Edo South for growth and relevance
