BENIN CITY – A former Labour Party (LP) governorship aspirant in Edo State, Hon. Ernest Abegbe, has announced his resignation from the party, citing the lingering internal crisis within its ranks.
In a statement personally signed and dated October 17, 2025, Abegbe said his decision followed extensive consultations with his family, supporters, stakeholders, and political associates across the 18 local government areas of the state and beyond.
Abegbe, who contested for the party’s governorship ticket in the 2024 primary election, described his exit as a difficult but necessary step to realign his political focus.
He explained that his decision became “urgently expedient considering the unending crisis rocking the party,” adding that he remains committed to his vision for a better and greater Edo State and Nigeria.
The financial expert, economist, and educationist, who has served in various capacities in both the public and private sectors, expressed gratitude to the Labour Party leadership for the opportunity to contribute to the party’s ideals and aspirations.
He, however, did not indicate his next political move.
