BENIN CITY – The Edo State Government has reiterated that the media remains a vital pillar for accountability, transparency, and national development, describing it as an indispensable driver of democracy and social change.
The State Government’s position was conveyed by the Coordinator, Office of the Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Edesiri Okpebholo Anani, during a public lecture and anniversary ceremony held at the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub, Benin City.
Speaking on the theme “Nigeria’s Future: Bleak or Bright? The Role of the Media,” Mrs. Anani said that the media occupies a strategic position in shaping public opinion, promoting good governance, and amplifying citizens’ voices in a democratic society.
“As we gather to reflect on this theme, we are reminded of the power of the media to influence public opinion, promote accountability and drive positive change,” she said.
“Nigeria stands at a defining moment of its history, one filled with challenges and opportunities. The media must continue to highlight these realities, hold leaders accountable, and amplify the voices and aspirations of the people.”
She added that a free, ethical, and independent press is essential for a functioning democracy, stating, “The media is the engine room of democracy. It informs the public, checks abuse of power, provides a platform for expression, and safeguards public interest.”
Mrs. Anani reaffirmed the commitment of the Edo State Government to continued partnership with the media in promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance.
She called for stronger collaboration to tell inspiring stories that reflect Nigeria’s resilience and potential for progress.
In her remarks, the Managing Director of BeeTV News, Ms. Best Orator, highlighted how independent journalism strengthens democracy by giving voice to the voiceless and holding power accountable.
“What started as a small flame of passion has become a growing force in Edo State and beyond,” she said.
“We have told stories that might have been buried and changed the narrative that the media must always bend to pressure.”
The ceremony featured cultural performances by students of the University of Benin and a lecture delivered by Professor Eddy Erhagbe, who underscored the media’s role in promoting democracy and national development.
He noted that while democracy has given Nigerians the right to choose their leaders, the media must sustain vigilance in driving accountability and transparency.
Highlights of the occasion included the presentation of a special gift to Governor Monday Okpebholo, the conferment of the Icon of the Year Award on former Edo State Governor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, and the unveiling of the BeeTV Foundation.
Dignitaries present included the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Blessing Sheriff Agbebaku; Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole; and Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Enabulele.
