BENIN CITY: The Edo State Government has explained why it has returned 2,950 plots of land to residents affected by the 2022 demolition at Oke-Oroma Community in Oredo Local Government Area, saying the move is aimed at restoring justice, protecting property rights, and correcting historical wrongs.

The demolition, carried out under the previous administration, displaced 1,550 property owners and destroyed nearly 90 houses, as the government then sought to reclaim over 1,200 hectares for a new town development.

The exercise sparked protests, arrests, and years of uncertainty for affected families.

Governor Monday Okpebholo, who pledged during his 2024 campaign to restore the land to rightful owners, directed the Ministry of Lands and Housing to undertake the process immediately after assuming office.

The ministry conducted a rigorous verification exercise to authenticate genuine ownership before issuing allocation letters to beneficiaries.

Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Hon. Yakubu Musa, said the return of the land underscores the administration’s commitment to people-centered governance.

“This is about doing what is right for the citizens. We are correcting past injustices, restoring hope, and ensuring that property rights are protected,” he said.

Surveyors have commenced demarcating the plots, while clearing operations are underway to facilitate smooth handover.

Musa explained that the government’s approach sends a clear message that Edo residents’ investments and properties will be respected and safeguarded.

Residents who received their allocation letters hailed the move as a restoration of justice and fulfillment of a long-standing promise.

Mr. Adebayo Benjamin Ogenelkhemeh described Governor Okpebholo as “a promise keeper who has brought back our hope,” while Mrs. Onose Onyegbulem expressed relief at reclaiming her family’s land.

The Edo State Government’s explanation highlights its broader philosophy that governance must have a human face, uphold justice, and correct past administrative wrongs, reinforcing citizens’ trust in the state’s leadership.
