The Federal Government has commenced the long-awaited dualisation of the Lokoja–Benin Road, specifically the Obajana Junction to Benin axis, reaffirming its commitment to delivering durable and sustainable infrastructure across the country.

Works on the critical highway resumed in February 2025 following the termination of poorly performing contracts, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to ensure a permanent solution to the road’s long-standing challenges. The project is being executed using Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) technology, which is designed to last between 50 and 100 years, significantly reducing the need for frequent repairs.

Speaking on the development, the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, disclosed that the project has been divided into four sections and reassigned to CGC Nigeria Ltd, BUA Construction Nigeria Ltd, and CBC Nigeria Ltd to ensure efficient delivery. He noted that construction activities are currently ongoing across the sections.

According to the minister, the dualisation is aimed at restoring full motorability on the Lokoja–Benin corridor, easing transportation difficulties for road users, and enhancing safety. He added that the road is a vital economic artery linking the North-Central and South-South regions, and its rehabilitation will significantly boost trade, commerce, and overall economic activities in Kogi and Edo States.

Engr. Umahi reiterated the Federal Government’s resolve to prioritize quality and longevity in road construction, stressing that the adoption of CRCP technology reflects a shift toward infrastructure that offers long-term value and reliability for Nigerians.

The Lokoja–Benin Road has for years been plagued by deterioration, traffic congestion, and accidents, making its reconstruction a major relief to motorists, transporters, and communities along the corridor.
