Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has praised the Nigerian Army for its proactive operations that ensured the safety of lives and property during the Christmas and New Year festivities.
The commendation was given at the 2025 West African Social Activities (WASA) organised by the 4 Brigade of the Nigerian Army at the Ekehuan Army Cantonment, Benin City.
Represented by the Commissioner for Finance, Mr Emmanuel Okoebor, the governor described the Army’s collaboration with other security agencies as key to the relative peace recorded in the state during the Yuletide.
A statement by the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 4 Brigade, Capt. Kennedy Anyanwu, said Edo witnessed comparatively low incidents of violence and criminality due to sustained operations and inter-agency synergy. Okpebholo also commended the Brigade’s successes against kidnappers, internet fraudsters and illegal oil bunkerers, noting that the efforts boosted public confidence.
He lauded the colourful WASA celebration, describing it as a reflection of Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and in line with Edo State’s cultural identity.
Earlier, the Commander, 4 Brigade, Brig.-Gen. Ahmed Balogun, said WASA was a long-standing tradition aimed at fostering unity and strengthening relations between soldiers, their families and host communities.
He said the Brigade met its 2025 training objectives on professionalism and operational excellence.
The event featured cultural dances from various ethnic groups, military drills, competitions, award presentations, the beating of the retreat and the lighting of a bonfire.
