BENIN CITY – The Edo State Government has commended women for their growing contributions to political and legislative development, while calling for greater inclusion of women in governance at all levels.
Speaking at the maiden edition of the Convergence of Women in Leadership and Impact Awards (COWLIA 0.1) held in Benin City, the Coordinator, Office of the State First Lady, Mrs Edesili Okpebholo-Anani, noted that women’s active participation continues to shape governance, influence policy direction, and strengthen democratic institutions across the state.
The event, organised by the League of Women Journalists (NILOWN), Edo State chapter, focused on advancing women’s leadership and participation.
Mrs Okpebholo-Anani, who was represented by the wife of the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Nimata Umar Ikhilor, stressed the need to boost women’s representation and ensure sustainable development through inclusive participation.
The one-day programme, themed “From Purpose to Platform: How Women Learn, Rise, Lead and Create Impact,” celebrated the achievements and contributions of women in leadership across various sectors.
In her goodwill message, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Eugenia Abdallah, underscored the critical role of women’s empowerment in nation-building, noting that women have consistently demonstrated courage and leadership in shaping families, communities, and nations.
She emphasised that empowerment must go beyond rhetoric and translate into concrete policies, inclusive governance frameworks, and equal access to education, economic resources, and leadership opportunities.
“True progress can only be achieved when women are fully empowered, given equal opportunities, and included in decision-making processes at all levels,” she said, adding that political participation remains a vital pathway for women to influence policies, advocate justice, and drive sustainable development.
Mrs Abdallah called on government institutions, civil society organisations, and community leaders to support initiatives that promote gender equality and leadership development.
“As we mark this occasion, let us reaffirm our commitment to breaking barriers, challenging stereotypes, and building an inclusive society where women’s voices are heard and respected. Empowering women is not only a moral obligation but also a strategic necessity for growth, peace, and prosperity,” she added.
She further urged women to take bold steps in pursuing leadership roles, stressing that their perspectives are essential for effective governance.
In her remarks, the Founder of NILOWV, Hon. Dame Esther Uduehi, represented by former Edo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Yinka Omorogbe (SAN), described the gathering as purposeful and reflective of strong vision and commitment to advancing women’s leadership.
In a Keynote address, former Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly and member representing Esan North East II, Hon. Maria Edeko, shared insights on pathways to impactful leadership and effective participation in governance.
