Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, has affirmed his dedication to support the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) in its mission to enhance Nigeria’s positive image internationally. This commitment was articulated during an official visit to the Minister of Interior by Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman and CEO of NiDCOM, on Tuesday, in Abuja.
The Minister underscored the importance of maintaining NiDCOM’s operations, emphasizing, “Sustaining NiDCOM is a collective responsibility. I want to assure you that our Ministry is prepared to extend its support because the activities of the commission on behalf of our diaspora community have far-reaching effects on our citizens at home.”
Furthermore, in a comprehensive discussion on the imperative of wealth creation within the government, the Minister acknowledged NiDCOM as a representative of “the nation’s positive image beyond our borders” and asserted that it “deserves more extensive support than it currently receives.”
He pointed out that many Nigerian families rely on their relatives working abroad, and by providing welfare support to this group, NiDCOM contributes significantly to upholding national integrity, security, and peace.
The Minister also highlighted the potential for a mutually beneficial collaboration between the Ministry of Interior and NiDCOM. Drawing inspiration from India, he emphasized the necessity of shifting the country’s focus from oil to a knowledge-based economy, which could bring about transformative changes.
Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman and CEO of NiDCOM, expressed her appreciation for the Minister’s generous gesture and assured that this support would motivate the commission to accomplish even more in its new phase. She conveyed the greetings of Nigerians living in the diaspora, who view the Minister as a dynamic and effective leader within the Ministry, and expressed their gratitude for his contributions.
The partnership between the Ministry of Interior and NiDCOM is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing Nigeria’s global reputation and delivering benefits to its citizens, both domestically and in the diaspora.
