Barely a year after escaping the violent wrath of his kinsmen for refusing to subject his daughter to the mandatory practice of female genital mutilation (FGM), Esho Aiyedun, the younger brother of Bright Aiyedun, has reportedly been attacked by suspected thugs allegedly led by those same kinsmen.

Recall that in August 2024, Bright Aiyedun and his wife fled their family home in Edo State following incessant threats from relatives after he refused to allow his daughter undergo circumcision.

On Tuesday, suspected thugs in the company of the kinsmen allegedly stormed Bright’s private residence in Edo State in search of him and his family. Failing to find them, they reportedly descended on Esho, who was at the residence at the time.

According to an eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the kinsmen angrily demanded to know Bright’s whereabouts. Esho, sensing hostility, politely explained that he had no knowledge of his elder brother’s location. This response, the eyewitness said, infuriated his uncle, who allegedly ordered the thugs to attack him.

Esho was reportedly dragged out of the apartment and severely beaten, sustaining multiple injuries and bleeding profusely. Neighbours in the community watched helplessly as the assault unfolded.

During the attack, property and personal belongings in the apartment were also allegedly damaged.

At the time of filing this report, Esho Aiyedun was receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital and was said to be in stable condition. Sources revealed that Bright’s kinsmen have vowed to make life unbearable for both brothers and their families for defying what they described as an age-long cultural tradition of female circumcision.
