Port Harcourt, Rivers State – There is a growing concern among traditional rulers, government institutions, and relevant agencies both within Africa and the diaspora regarding the erosion of moral values across African societies. The rise in cases of amorous and perverse behavior among individuals of all age groups has stirred public discourse, with many calling for urgent action to address the situation.
In contemporary times, expressions of sexual desires—particularly same-sex relationships—have become more visible across various communities. While proponents cite fundamental human rights, others argue these behaviors contradict long-standing African cultural and moral beliefs.
Notable African scholars have long commented on the struggle between traditional values and external cultural influences. Ugandan poet Okot p’Bitek, in his famous work Song of Lawino, offered a postcolonial critique on neocolonialism and Western influence on African traditions. Nigerian poet Christopher Okigbo celebrated African spirituality and rites, while Jean-Joseph Rabearivelo, a Malagasy poet, explored existential conflicts arising from cultural shifts.
However, many argue that group values and traditional ethics have been largely abandoned. In Nigeria, stakeholders have called on authorities to reinforce the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2014, signed into law under President Goodluck Jonathan. The legislation criminalizes same-sex relationships and other related conduct, carrying penalties of up to 14 years imprisonment. Some advocates have controversially proposed amendments to impose even stiffer penalties, including capital punishment.
Despite the law, reports continue to surface of individuals allegedly involved in such activities escaping justice. In Port Harcourt, recent unconfirmed events have further ignited public outrage.
An unverified report implicates Mrs. Wealth Jane Obibi, an educationist and school proprietor in Port Harcourt, in an alleged same-sex relationship. According to her former university roommate, Juliet Chukwu, Mrs. Obibi was involved in a romantic relationship with a female teacher named Ada. The matter reportedly came to light when a student, Miss Daniella, daughter of Mrs. Eunice Owhor, caught her school proprietor, Mrs. Obibi, in an intimate moment with the teacher.
Complications escalated when it was revealed that Mrs. Eunice Owhor had also allegedly been involved in a similar relationship. At a family event in early July 2024, Juliet Chukwu was allegedly discovered in a compromising situation with Mrs. Owhor. Following these revelations, Daniella’s father, Chief Owhor, is said to have led a local vigilante group to Mrs. Obibi’s residence. However, Mrs. Obibi and her family reportedly escaped with the help of a neighbor.
Traditional authorities in the Garrison axis of Port Harcourt have condemned the incident, calling it a sacrilege. Youth leaders and community members have vowed to work closely with security agencies to identify and prosecute individuals involved in such acts.
While some community members have expressed outrage, others have warned against mob justice and unverified accusations. There are also speculations regarding the involvement or awareness of Mr. Obibi, reportedly a pastor, in his wife’s alleged activities.
As of the latest reports, Mrs. Obibi and her family are said to have fled Port Harcourt under the guise of a family vacation. Mrs. Eunice Owhor reportedly died from injuries sustained during a mob attack. Meanwhile, Juliet Chukwu has allegedly been handed over to police authorities.
In a press briefing, the police public relations officer confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and that sufficient evidence may warrant prosecution. He assured the public that law enforcement is prepared to issue nationwide alerts for the apprehension of those who flee.
This unfolding story has once again raised critical questions about the tension between modern human rights discourse and African traditional values. While enforcement of existing laws remains a contentious subject, calls for a balanced, lawful, and rights-respecting approach continue to grow.
