The Edo State House of Assembly on Monday adopted a resolution calling on the state government and security agencies to take urgent steps to curb the menace of incessant kidnappings in Etsako East Local Government Area and across the state.
The resolution followed the consideration of a motion of urgent public importance presented by the member representing Etsako East Constituency, Hon. Kingsley Ugabi.
During his presentation, Hon. Ugabi lamented the rising cases of kidnapping and other criminal activities in his constituency, which, he said, had forced many farmers to abandon their farmlands.
He noted that farmers were the worst hit by the insecurity challenges, stressing that the development posed a major threat to food production, as many could no longer go to their farms for fear of attack.
The lawmaker warned that the current spate of kidnappings was already undermining food security in the country, insisting that urgent measures must be taken to address the menace in Edo.
Other lawmakers, in their separate contributions, expressed grave concern over the rising insecurity in their constituencies, citing incidents of kidnapping and armed robbery attacks.
The House, while calling for immediate intervention to tackle the trend, resolved that community policing should be strengthened alongside other security measures to curb kidnappings across the state
