ABUJA: The Federal Government has commenced the implementation of key welfare agreements with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), signalling a major step towards ending the prolonged unrest in the university system.

In a directive issued on Monday to Vice-Chancellors of federal universities, Education Minister Dr Tunji Alausa announced a 40 percent increase in the Consolidated Academic Allowance (CAA) for ASUU members, effective from January 1, 2026.

He confirmed that some universities have already reflected the increase in staff salaries.

Minister Alausa reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to the welfare of academic staff and the stability of the nation’s universities.

He directed all federal universities to integrate the approved increment into their payroll structures, ensuring all eligible academic staff benefit promptly.

The Minister also emphasised strict compliance with the Consolidated Tools Allowance (CATA), noting that its payment has been approved by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) and provided for in the 2026 budget.

He urged university authorities to utilise available resources to ensure timely payment.

“Prompt implementation of the CAA increase and CATA will boost staff morale, strengthen the academic environment, and improve teaching and research outcomes,” Alausa said.

He further reiterated the government’s commitment to honouring agreements with education stakeholders, maintaining transparency, and fostering industrial harmony in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
