The Edo State Government has directed all public servants, political appointees and government functionaries intending to contest in the forthcoming electoral cycle to resign their appointments on or before March 1, 2026.

In a government special announcement dated February 28, 2026, the state government stated that any officer seeking elective office must formally step down prior to participating in party primaries or any stage of the electoral process.

The directive, signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, Esq., was issued in compliance with the Electoral Act (Amendment) 2026.

According to the announcement, the measure is aimed at preventing potential disqualification of aspirants by relevant electoral authorities and ensuring strict adherence to extant electoral laws.

The government emphasised that the requirement is intended to promote fairness, transparency and a level playing field for all aspirants, while safeguarding the integrity and neutrality of public institutions.

It further reminded public office holders that governance responsibilities must not be compromised by partisan political activities.

“All affected officers are advised to take immediate and necessary steps to comply with this directive within the stipulated timeline,” the statement read.

The administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo reiterated its commitment to constitutionalism, respect for the rule of law and strict observance of due process in matters relating to governance and political participation.

“The Senator Monday Okpebholo-led Administration remains firmly committed to upholding constitutionalism, respecting the rule of law, and ensuring that due process is strictly observed in all matters of governance and political participation,” the statement added.
