The Remedy:
THE issue of indecent dressing among students in higher institutions in Nigeria has grown to become a great epidemic and has eaten deep into the system causing a great deal of harm.
It has gotten to the level where the students no longer see it as an issue anymore. They parade themselves over campus with clothes that was initially frown upon all in the name of modern fashion.
This problem is prominent among female students who has added even the sagging “low waist” which initially was a “man’s thing” and added more problem to what they had. Most female students in our campuses today wear clothes that put the upper part of their breast on display and “crop tops” that show and exposes their underpants.
Indecent dressing however is a growing weed which has been watered by different factors. Research has shown that the continuous use of internet is one major factor of this problem. Other factors include, pressure from friends, wrong parenting styles. The most influential factor is the westernization of our cultures and traditions as a result of constant exposure to Western media (social media).
The implication of this is that the number of female students harassed has increased by 100% (percent), a significant increased in campus prostitution is also recorded across higher institutions in Nigeria. The effect of this problem are not only external but also internal, overtime the academic performance of the person or individuals involved also reduces. religious leaders now do.
The parents on their part have the responsibility of laying the foundation from the adolescent to the teenage before they leave for their various institutions and even when their children are out of the house a constant visitation to keep them in check will be a good step to making sure they maintain sanity even with the presence of peer pressure.
The ultimate responsibility lies in the ladies. They should seek to carry themselves with dignity and protect their womanhood.
The menace of indecent dressing is a moral and social ill that should not be overlooked hence the media, parents, youths and all relevant authorities should stand up to the challenge of making sure that every symptom of the epidemic known as indecent dressing is completely eradicated from our campuses and society at large.
