The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is on the verge of securing a major sponsorship deal worth several billions of naira, with the announcement expected to coincide with the unveiling of a new chairman for the league.
A senior official of the National Sports Commission (NSC), who spoke to BSN Sports on condition of anonymity, disclosed that discussions surrounding a new sponsorship package are at an advanced stage and that the deal is expected to provide a significant financial boost to the domestic top-flight league.
The development comes amid a major leadership shake-up within Nigerian football following the reported mass resignation of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and members of the NFF Executive Committee.
The leadership crisis has created uncertainty around the administration of the NPFL, which has already entered the new season and is scheduled to continue with Matchday 2 this weekend.
Former NPFL Chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye previously secured a three-year sponsorship agreement reportedly worth $2.5 million annually, amounting to $7.5 million over the duration of the contract.
The latest sponsorship package is expected to surpass previous financial commitments and provide additional resources for improving the organisation, commercial value and overall standard of the NPFL.
Speaking, the NSC source said the sponsorship announcement would follow shortly after the appointment of the new NPFL chairman.
“Let me reveal this to you. As soon as the new league chairman is unveiled, a league sponsor that will bring in billions of naira will also be unveiled to boost the standard of the league,” the source said.
The anticipated development could provide a significant financial lifeline for the NPFL at a crucial period, with stakeholders increasingly calling for stronger commercial partnerships and improved investment in the domestic game.
The identity of the prospective sponsor and the precise financial value of the proposed agreement are expected to be made public when the new NPFL leadership is formally unveiled.
