LAGOS – Mr. Segun Olulade, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly has projected that the 8th Assembly in the state would make significant achievements in legislative business.
Olulade, the Chairman, House Committee on Information, said this in a statement in Ikeja.
The lawmaker said that Mr. Adeyemi Ikuforiji, the Speaker of the house, had laid a solid foundation in legislative business in the house which members of the incoming assembly would build upon.
Olulade said that he believed that with current wind of change blowing across the country, the 8th Assembly, when it comes in and settles down, would ensure it surpasses the high standard already set by the 7th assembly.
The legislator also commended the Nigerian Army over its recent successes recorded in the North-East region, which led to rescue of 200 girls and 93 women from the Sambisa forest.
He said that the nation would now believe more in the ability of the military to combat insurgency and bring it to an end.
Olulade said with the incoming administration of Gen Muhammadu Buhari , which would assume office on May 29, Nigeria would surely be returned to its rightful place of honour and dignity in the comity of nations.
The legislator thanked Lagos residents for their resilience in the face of the “complicated political developments“ towards the last general election.
He appealed to all ethnic communities to continue to work together for the growth of Lagos State and Nigeria in general.
“We are one family that must not allow penetration from those who seek to divide the existing unity being enjoyed in the State all the time,” he said.
Meanwhile, a legislator-elect in the state, Mr. Oladele Ladipupo, told newsmen in Ikeja that he looked forward to his transformation from the executive arm to the legislature as he was once a local government chairman.
Ladipupo, who was elected in Lagos Mainland 1, said he would not be like a fish out of water and would fit in very well in his new calling.
He promised to do what he could about unemployment and help to eliminate poverty in the lives of the people.
Desmond Elliot, another legislator-elect, (APC-Surulere I) said that the interest of the residents would be paramount while representing his constituency.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had presented certificates of return to winners of the April 11 House of Assembly elections in the state.
Speaking at the occasion Mr. Akin Orebiyii, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC had urged the elected officers to justify the reason for voting them into office.
“The election witnessed a remarkable departure from the previous ones, especially with the use of Permanent Voter Cards and Smart card readers, the two devices helped facilitate a more authentic accreditation process.
“The commission is mindful of the areas which still need to be worked on and will endeavour to incorporate necessary improvements in future elections.
“Winners should be magnanimous in victory and the losers should be gallant in defeat.
“There is a need for elected officers to put in place policies and programmes that will improve the quality of lives of the electorate.
“It is important that the new administrators endeavour to cater for all, regardless of tribe or party differences.
“Service to all should be a key rule to all elected officers,’’ he said.
Orebiyii commended the contestants for the mature and decent way they conducted themselves during the March 28 and April 11 elections.
According to him, Lagos was counted as one of the battle grounds but eventually became one of the most peaceful states in the country.
