The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the rape of one Tena Amgbari, Blessings Igurubia, Linda Eribodise Amaran, and murder of Felicia Iyire who are all students of an undisclosed Institution in Rivers State.
Information revealed that the girls hostel in the Institution was invaded by the alleged cult members who have being terrorizing the area for months unchallenged. One of the girls, identified as Felicia Iyire who fought with the cultists was reportedly stabbed to death by the group leader for trying to stop them from raping her.
The stories of rape in higher Institution in Nigeria is worrisome as the scourge continues unabated and this aborminable, shameless and atrocious act against women and girls if not checked by relevant authorities will consume the Nation.
Investigation revealed that several rape incidents and attacks in the girl’s lodge have being reported to the school authority and the police but little or nothing was done to prevent the ugly incident.
It was gathered that one Preye Stanley, and five others who are now at large have been implicated by a reliable source stressing that they are among members of the suspected cult group terrorizing the students of the Institution and the neighborhood.
Report had it that the school have no perimeter fencing making it possible and easy for hoodlums to access the school and carryout nefarious and clandestine activities unchecked.
Speaking to journalists on the incident one of the lecturer from the Faculty of Social Science in the school who pleaded anonymity said it is not the first time students of the Institution have complained of sexual harassment and molestation from suspected cultist who have continued to have access to the school as the school lacks any security arrangements and perimeter fencing.
He said it became worst in the last three months, as there has been an upsurge in the numbers of rape related cases carried out by cultists around the school environment and the number appear to be increasing in astronomical proportions as the days roll by. This has created serious concerns in the minds of many as cultists are having a free time molesting and sexually harassing students (girls) and female lecturers who have even threatened to resign and leave the school if the school authority and police don’t guarantee their safety.
“The school authority, Government and the police need to be blamed for the incident as the several complaints by the students and female lecturers were not taken seriously, hence some innocent students are now the victims of the negligent and rot in the system. It’s clear, some of our female lecturers will certainly resign now for their safety unless something urgent is done to address the issue.
“I spoke with one of the girls before they took them to the hospital. Her narration of the incident shows it will take longer time before the trauma of the sad event can be forgotten. The girl who describe the sad incident cried uncontrollable. The body of Felicia Iyire stabbed to death have being deposited at an undisclosed mortuary. I felt their pains and ashamed that I lecture where the lives of female students and lecturers are not guaranteed”.
Speaking to newsmen, one of the survivors, wept uncontrollable narrating her ordeal in the hands of the six suspected cult boys along with three of her friends. She told journalists that she can identify one of the boys who incidentally have wooed her for months but following her refusal threatened to deal with her.
“Its painful to narrate the rape incident, we were forcefully raped as the boys threatened to kill me and my friends with a knife if we refuse them sex. Felicia Iyire who tried to fight back was stabbed severally and she died. They took turns to rape us and also took all our belongings as we shouted for help and none came.
“I feel like killing myself. Life is not worth living anymore, I have been humiliated sexually. We the students have complained to the school authority about the frequent harassment yet the school authority, police and the Government couldn’t do anything to help and save the situation, what we fear most happened”.
The police spoke person assured the public that the perpetrators of this sad incident will surely be arrested as they are doing everything possible to get to the root of the matter and make sure that those involved in this atrocity are apprehended and brought to Justice.
