… Calls for Police reform

BENIN CITY – The Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has granted automatic employment to the daughter of the late Comrade Anthony Kaduna Eboigbodin, a former Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Edo State Chapter.

Comrade Eboigbodin recently passed away under controversial circumstances.

During a condolence visit to the bereaved family, Governor Okpebholo expressed his sympathies and assured residents of his administration’s commitment to addressing police conduct in the state.

He pledged to engage with the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Umoru Ozigi, to ensure that law enforcement officers operate in a manner that protects public safety.

The governor, accompanied by the Acting Chairman of the NLC in Edo State, Comrade Bernard Joman Egwakhide, and other labour and civil society leaders, lamented that the circumstances surrounding the unionist’s death were avoidable.

Reports suggest that Comrade Eboigbodin collapsed and died following a heated argument with police officers at a checkpoint.

“It is painful that we have lost a soul in this manner,” Governor Okpebholo said. “I will speak to the police about their conduct to ensure they act responsibly in Edo State. His death is tragic, but we all must accept that life is fleeting.”

The Acting NLC Chairman, Comrade Egwakhide, and civil society leaders, including Rev. David Ugolor and Barrister Abraham Oviawe, have called for a comprehensive investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding Comrade Eboigbodin’s death.

Following his remarks, Governor Okpebholo signed the condolence register in honour of the late labour leader, who passed away at the age of 64.
